1. Introduction

Vertex Math ("VertexMath", "we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting the privacy of users of our interactive mathematics learning platform at vertexmath.ca (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your rights under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of personal information:

  • Account information: name, email address, and password when you register
  • Profile data: grade level, school (optional), and learning preferences
  • Usage data: lesson progress, quiz results, time spent, and feature interactions
  • AI tutor content: messages you send to the Socratic tutor and any photos of handwritten work you choose to upload
  • Payment information: billing details processed by Stripe (we do not store card numbers)
  • Technical data: IP address, browser type, device identifiers, and cookies

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account
  • Deliver course content, track progress, and personalize your learning experience
  • Process payments and send receipts
  • Send product updates, notifications, and support communications
  • Analyze usage to improve the Service
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on servers operated by Google Firebase, located in the United States. By using the Service, you acknowledge that your information may be transferred to and processed in the US, which may have different data protection laws than Canada. We apply reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect your data against unauthorized access, disclosure, or loss.

5. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

  • Firebase (Google LLC): database, authentication, and hosting
  • Claude API (Anthropic, PBC): generating AI tutor responses and analyzing photos you upload
  • Stripe Inc.: payment processing
  • Umami Analytics: privacy-focused, cookie-less usage analytics

6. AI Tutor and Uploaded Images

When you use the Socratic tutor, the text of your messages, the question you are working on, and any photo of handwritten work you upload are sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, PBC (Claude API), so it can generate a response. This content is used only to provide the tutoring response to you.

We never sell student conversations or uploaded images, and they are never used to train AI models: we don't train models on them, and under its commercial API terms Anthropic does not use them to train its models. Anthropic processes this content as our service provider.

Please do not include personal details (such as your full name, address, or phone number) in tutor messages or photos.

7. Data Retention

We keep your account information and learning progress for as long as your account is active. We keep AI tutor conversations and uploaded images only as long as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account or ask us to delete your data, we delete or anonymize your personal information, except where we must keep certain records (for example, payment records) to meet legal or tax obligations.

8. Children's Privacy

The Service is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has created an account, please contact us at contact@vertexmath.ca and we will promptly delete that account.

Users under the age of majority in their province or territory should use the Service with the knowledge of a parent or guardian, and are encouraged to review this policy with them.

A parent or guardian may ask to access, correct, or delete their child's personal information by emailing contact@vertexmath.ca. We will verify the request before acting on it.

9. Your Rights

Under PIPEDA, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Withdraw consent, subject to legal or contractual restrictions

10. Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to maintain your session and remember preferences. Note that our analytics system (Umami) is privacy-first and does not use cookies to track your behavior. You may disable cookies in your browser settings, though doing so may affect some features of the Service.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or by posting a notice on the Service. Continued use of the Service after such notice constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
